Short Circuit Analysis Study

Are your employees and equipment safe? Protect yourself against risk with proper analysis

TARGET ISSUE

When a fault occurs in any electrical power distribution system that exceeds the safe interrupting or withstand levels of equipment, the consequences can be devastating.

ABOUT THE SOLUTION

A short circuit analysis of the power system running through the plant ensures that people and equipment are properly protected. It establishes fault current levels and the required safe interrupting and withstand ratings of key components.

Ensuring a safe working environment for personnel, protecting costly equipment from severe damage, and reducing downtime from the damages is critical to the safe, effective, reliable operation of any plant.

When a fault occurs in any electrical power distribution system that exceeds the safe short circuit current rating of equipment (sometimes known as withstand rating) levels of equipment, the consequences can be devastating. Serious personal injury, severely damaged equipment and costly downtime can result.

During a fault, all available energy in the system, including the utility feeding the plant, tries to flow towards the fault point. For instance, a short circuit from a 600-volt, 1200 amp rated MCC being fed from a 1000 kVA transformer loaded to 1000 horsepower (1000 amps) can rise to a magnitude of 18,000 amps. A multiple of 18 times normal! Without safe isolation, this energy will be absorbed by the equipment at the fault point, resulting in a devastating energy release and a rapid disintegration of the MCC and its environment which will impose serious harm to nearby personnel.

A short circuit study by Actemium US establishes fault current levels and the required safe interrupting ratings and withstand ratings of all key components in the system (circuit breakers and fuses). With this, all protective devices are checked for their actual ability to survive and protect during a short circuit.
